I was talking with Alan "Al" Lane the other day who is a devote user of Ole Time Woodsman Fly Dope. Al is a legendary basketball coach here in Maine as well as a football, basketball, baseball, and soccer referee.
Baseball season in Maine is infamous for its black flies and mosquitoes.
Prior to umpiring behind the plate, Al methodically takes his umpires hat and puts two drops of Ole Time Woodsman Fly Dope on each corner of the bill of his hat. According to Al, I am good to go for the entire game!
Al likes to tell the story about umpiring a baseball game in Dexter, Maine. After applying the Fly Dope, he settled in behind the catcher. While the pitcher was doing his warm ups, Al asked the catcher, " How are the black flies this afternoon?" The catcher replied, "They were really bad until you showed up!"
True story.
